I would recommend Notepad ++ Inspite of its simple name this editor is very powerful. Notepad++ supports highlighting for many software languages . Main are: C++, Java, PHP, Perl, Python, ASP, HTML, CSS.
Inside options you can change scheme color as you wish. Inside TextFX menue you can find something useful for you, there is UTF-8 support and Linux to mac convertion. You can also orginize tabs, add many plugins and etc.
