Your Guide To Infrastructure as a Service
No matter if you ask ten industry experts or ten people off the street what cloud computing is, the chances are you’re going to get at least ten different answers. The American Super Bowl is said to charge up to $3million per 30 second ad and this year saw cloud service Chatter being advertised so there’s no doubt that we’re starting to become more aware of what the cloud is. Cloud computing is a very broad term so you need to look at the technological terms that go into making up cloud computing is you really want to understand what it is.
Obviously the best place to start is getting a broad understanding of cloud computing. For most people, computing mean using the hardware and software on the machine in front of them but when you compute in the cloud you’re using everything through a remote location which means you’re creating, saving and sending documents through an internet connection.
Infrastructure as a Service, IaaSis the most technically correct term to describe cloud computing. It’s the overall process that incorporates software as a service, SaaS, and platform as a service, PaaS, to run an efficient cloud computing environment. The whole point of the cloud and therefore IaaS is that it allows you to scale up and scale down instantly so you have access to the space you require. IaaS is sometimes called Hardware as a Service because it really is about taking the core of your computing and moving them to a remote cloud hosting environment.
Platform as a service, PaaS, allows you to not only run your applications via the cloud but also to build them on the cloud too. One of the more popular examples of PaaS is Google’s own App Engine. The tool itself is allows developers to build and run web applications through a cloud hosting platform which again eliminates the need to find the space to host it yourself.
