They imitate plotter’s actions in that way they look for holes in website’s security. Security scanners are numerous, but the most of them are not intended for website security testing.
One of such programs is XSpider, which is introduced by Russian developers. This programs runs under Windows 2000/XP, but websites are scanned by XSpider may be placed on any platform. We have to say that such systems are passive. Scanner can show you holes in your security but can not repair any flaws.
The process of scanning is rather simple. At first XSpider starts scanning of all available ports on a host. Then scanner analyzes next protocols FTP, HTTP, DNS, SMTP trying to find place for future attacks. Next step is availability check of standard directories such as /test, /images, /download and etc. XSpider website security also tests server and other server software such as Apache, Tomcat, SSH, BIND. All revealed defects are mentioned in one report, which is generated by XSpider.
Finally we have to say that user interface is very functional and comfortable besides XSpider has an opportunity for additional tuning.
